Net Day Speak Up Survey Results Are In! February 13, 2009

Thanks to all that participated in Speak Up 2008! I have listed links below to our survey results for the district. The federal government is working on $1 billion funding package for educational technology. Speak Up suggests that we look at our results as we plan how we might use these funds.
- Students were asked to design their ultimate school by identifying the tools that would have the greatest positive impact on their learning (question 27 on grades 6-12, question 24 on grades 3-5, question 14 on grades K-2).
- Teachers were asked to identify the technology tools and strategies that hold the greatest potential for increasing student achievement and success (Q32), as well as the obstacles to using more technology in their school (Q7).
- Parents were asked how satisfied they were with the use of technology at their child’s school (Q7) and which technology tools they would recommend as a good investment to enhance student achievement (Q10).

Thanks to all of you that attended my sessions today at AIMA’s Annual Conference at Spain Park High School. I hope that you got some information that you can use at your school with your teachers and students. We talked today about using digital photography and other digital content in your curriculum. I hope that as you collaborate with classroom teachers, you create some great opportunities for your students to demonstrate what they have learned. I have added the links and handouts that you requested. Let me know if you have any other questions. School is Cool at Hueytown High. Today we talked about many ways to integrate technology in the classroom. If you heard an idea that you liked and need more information, let me know. If you need other ideas in a specific content area, I can provide you with other resources and links to some great lesson plans and rubrics. Thanks for letting me share information with you today! Have you tried to create a podcast yet? For your students? With your students? I am in a workshop today about podcasting. I would love to try and do some professional development sessions for teachers so they could listen on their iPod or other mp3 player whenever they have time. What do you think? Would you listen? If you created a podcast to review material for your students, do you think they would download and listen? Some students are creating their own podcasts to share what they have learned about a topic. What do you want to try to do? There are some principals out there that are doing podcasts for their school communities on various topics. Do you think this is a good idea? Share your ideas about podcasting. What do you want to try first? What PD sessions would you like to see in a podcast format?

Last week, I had the opportunity to attend the AETA Fall Symposium. It was a great conference with plenty of helpful information. One of the sessions that I found interesting was on the 1:1 initiative. Several school districts have already taken this step. They chose a grade level to start with and gave each teacher and student a laptop. We discussed how you prepare to take this major step — funding, maintenance, professional development, parental involvment, student training, etc… I can see how it would be great in the classroom. What could you do if every student in your class/school had a laptop? What would you worry about?

When planning for new classrooms, there is always the great debate, laptop or desktop. We always provide a computer for each teacher, but should it be a laptop or desktop? There are many pros for laptops. They are more mobile, provide greater flexibility. Teachers can move them around the room, take them to meetings, take them to professional devlopment activities, and take them home when they need to. There are cons. Security is a problem. Some teachers may worry about students taking them. Who will be liable if the laptop is damaged? What would you rather have? Why?

Several people are attending a workshop today on using Blogs in their classroom. I have talked to several teachers that have already used blogs with their students with success! These teachers tell me that students that would not write or respond in their journals participate more on the blog. Students are interested to see what their classmates write and they enjoy using the technology. Is this not what our goal is? We want the students engaged in the learning. Use the tools available to you! You can set up a blog for free and get your students sharing what they learn with a global audience. Have you used a blog in your classroom? Did you have success? Any problems? What are some things to think about? Privacy? Are you planning to start a blog? Send me the links…

It is back to school for all of you. I hope that you had a great summer and got lots of rest. The fun begins again this year. I have been busy reading tech plans all summer and we have a lot of work to do. We are all in this together, so we will get them all straightened out. Please try and plan your technology professional development early so teachers can make good use of the information that you provide for them. The training calendar will be coming soon. It has grown quite a bit and I am still reserving rooms and securing dates. The local schools will have to pay for most of the subs, so be prepared for that. Most of you put that item in your budget.
My focus for this year is going to be Technology Integration…. sound familiar? I would be happy to come to your school and do an inservice with your staff — takes about 45 minutes to an hour. It is an introduction and I show them some practical samples done with minimal equipment. It is the session that I taught at the back to school conferences. Let me know if you are interested and I will put you on the calendar.
If there is anything we need to discuss here, just let me know and I can post things to get the discussion started!

The Alabama Instructional Media Association held their annual conference on Monday, June 11th. To those of you that were there, thanks for coming and I hoped you got some great information to take back with you. To those library/media specialists that were not there, you really missed out. The guest speakers were very good and the concurrent sessions were informative.
I would like to thank all of you that attended my sessions. If you have any questions about the ideas and lessons that I shared, please do not hesitate to email me. I will be posting some additional lessons on my website in the future, so check back and look for those when you get a chance. Let me know if you use any of the ideas with your students. I would love to see some student work samples and find out if you had success with the activities.
Please let me know what topics you would like presented at next year’s conference. You know that we are already planning….
