School is Cool at Hueytown High. Today we talked about many ways to integrate technology in the classroom. If you heard an idea that you liked and need more information, let me know. If you need other ideas in a specific content area, I can provide you with other resources and links to some great lesson plans and rubrics. Thanks for letting me share information with you today! What else do you need? What other resources can we provide to help you deliver quality instruction for your students?

Last week, I had the opportunity to attend the AETA Fall Symposium. It was a great conference with plenty of helpful information. One of the sessions that I found interesting was on the 1:1 initiative. Several school districts have already taken this step. They chose a grade level to start with and gave each teacher and student a laptop. We discussed how you prepare to take this major step — funding, maintenance, professional development, parental involvment, student training, etc… I can see how it would be great in the classroom. What could you do if every student in your class/school had a laptop? What would you worry about?

When planning for new classrooms, there is always the great debate, laptop or desktop. We always provide a computer for each teacher, but should it be a laptop or desktop? There are many pros for laptops. They are more mobile, provide greater flexibility. Teachers can move them around the room, take them to meetings, take them to professional devlopment activities, and take them home when they need to. There are cons. Security is a problem. Some teachers may worry about students taking them. Who will be liable if the laptop is damaged? What would you rather have? Why?

It is back to school for all of you. I hope that you had a great summer and got lots of rest. The fun begins again this year. I have been busy reading tech plans all summer and we have a lot of work to do. We are all in this together, so we will get them all straightened out. Please try and plan your technology professional development early so teachers can make good use of the information that you provide for them. The training calendar will be coming soon. It has grown quite a bit and I am still reserving rooms and securing dates. The local schools will have to pay for most of the subs, so be prepared for that. Most of you put that item in your budget.
My focus for this year is going to be Technology Integration…. sound familiar? I would be happy to come to your school and do an inservice with your staff — takes about 45 minutes to an hour. It is an introduction and I show them some practical samples done with minimal equipment. It is the session that I taught at the back to school conferences. Let me know if you are interested and I will put you on the calendar.
If there is anything we need to discuss here, just let me know and I can post things to get the discussion started!
